On-site PPA for photovoltaics

On-Site PPA for photovoltaics

Solar power, with no initial investment

Sustainable energy. No investment required. Complete planning certainty

With an on-site PPA (Power Purchase Agreement), you can secure fixed, predictable electricity costs for a period of 10 to 20 years.

By directly using the solar power generated on-site, you save on grid fees, benefit from tax advantages, and permanently reduce your energy costs below the level of traditional grid power. At the same time, you make a measurable contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions and strengthen your ESG performance.

Creating value

Contract expiration & asset transfer

You get the best of both worlds: With an On-Site PPA, you often have the option to take ownership of the fully operational solar power system at the end of the contract term. A service-based solar solution thus becomes a long-term asset – usually for a nominal residual value.

What is an On-Site PPA?

An On-Site PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) is a long-term electricity supply contract between a company and a system operator. In this model, the photovoltaic system is installed directly on the company’s premises or rooftop (on-site). The company purchases the generated electricity at a pre-agreed fixed price, while the partner takes full responsibility for the investment, construction, and operation of the system.

The primary advantages are cost savings and planning security. Since the electricity is consumed directly on-site, grid fees, electricity taxes, and other levy-based components are largely eliminated. Furthermore, companies secure a fixed electricity price for 10 to 20 years, making them independent of price fluctuations in the energy market.

In the On-Site PPA model, the PPA provider (operator) generally bears all costs. This includes planning, financing, and installation, as well as ongoing maintenance, insurance, and any necessary repairs. As a result, the participating company incurs no financial risk and no personnel effort.

By using solar power generated directly on-site, so-called Scope 2 emissions (indirect emissions from purchased energy) are significantly reduced. Since it is a new installation, the project also fulfills the criterion of ‘additionality,’ which is particularly valuable for sustainability reports according to ESG criteria.

Electricity volumes that the company does not currently require are typically fed into the public grid by the plant operator or temporarily stored in optional battery storage systems for later use (e.g., at night or for peak loads). The details regarding remuneration or the utilization of surplus power are governed by the individual On-Site PPA (Power Purchase Agreement).

At the end of the contract term (usually after 10, 15, or 20 years), there are typically three options:

  • The company takes over the system at its residual value or for a symbolic price.
  • The contract is extended under new terms and conditions.
  • The provider decommissions the system and restores the roof to its original condition.
